Weezer - Hash Pipe Single

"Hash Pipe" is by far the weirdest song on The Green Album. I love it and I think it was a natural choice for the first single, but the single itself and the video for it (the sumo wrestlers were Rivers Cuomo's joke response to the label's request that Weezer do a T 'n A video. Nobody has bigger T's or A's than sumo wrestlers, so mission accomplished) are among the weirdest things the band has ever done, which is saying something for a band which dusted off Kenny G. and threw him in a song for no reason.

Anyway, one of the great things about The Green Album is that Rivers apparently wrote piles of great songs for the album, only 10 of which made the cut. If you ever buy any of the singles from this era, the b-sides will be just as good as the a-sides. "I Do" and "Starlight" are good enough to have made the album, and if they were recorded in the post-Maladroit era, they would have probably be included in the deluxe version of the album. The Jimmy Pop (of Bloodhound Gang fame) remix of "Hash Pipe" is a little unnecessary, but it's not unpleasant. All in all this is a very good single.
