Calling the World shows that Rooney is swinging for the fences. The bring in lush orchestral arrangements and huge choral harmonies. Both the music and the artwork suggest a certain desire to be like Queen, but Rooney has never sounded as vintage as they want to. They have the sort of vintage vibe that comes when a 20-something guy dons 40-something thrift store duds. It's a good look, but that doesn't mean anyone is going to think you're from the 70's. This album isn't a failure, it just doesn't have its desired effect. I did really like "I Should've Been After You" but the rest of the album isn't quite as good as Rooney's self-titled debut.
