I usually hate to buy tribute albums. The bands who appear on them are usually a bunch of nobodys and even if they are a well-known band they generally don't contribute much to the songs they're covering. I picked up this album because it is neither of the above. It's a bunch of originals by bands who were heavily influenced by The Band and at the very end there's a track from The Band. It's just a bunch of great country rock type awesomeness. There are songs from such bands as Mercury Rev, Wilco, Sparklehorse, The Gourds, Sufjan Stevens, and many others. The only puzzling track was, "The Devil Came From Kansas" by Procol Harum. Procol Harum was a contemporary of The Band and that particular track came out right after The Band released their debut album. I'd like to see some documentation as to whether or not "The Devil Cam From Kansas" was really inspired by The Band. It's a great track, but it's late and I'm paranoid. Anyway, this album was solid all the way 'round. I enjoyed all of it, but mainly it made me want to drop the needle on The Band and let them carry me away into musical bliss.
