Somewhere along the line someone figured out that every odd-numbered Ash album tends to be a little darker and harder rocking than the even-numbered albums, which tend to be more poppy and light. Meltdown is no exception to the darker, harder-rocking formula, but this is the best of the darker Ash albums. To say that this album is darker is not to say that it's Norwegian death metal. There are still some very beautiful melodies on this album like the Romeo and Juliet themed, "Starcrossed." The darker songs like the apocalyptic "Clones" are also great. All in all Meltdown is another solid Ash album that fits right up there with 1977 and Free All Angels as the best Ash has to offer.
