I guess I have to give it up for Anything Box. They stayed in the synthpop game long after it stopped being mainstream. This album came out in 2001, a full 11 years after their fantastic debut. That being the case, I can't help but wish that Anything Box was still cranking out the same quality music they did in 1990. On The Universe is Expanding, you'll hear some guitars being pushed through cheap sounding multi-effects units, faux space-age transmissions, and a whole lot of odd synth sounds. You can tell that they are really trying to capture something, but what that is just isn't clear. This just isn't enjoyable music.
I got this album out of an end-of-the-year sale bin. I bought it just because it was an Anything Box album and it cost me 2 dollars. Even at that price, I don't know if it was worth it. Believe me, it hurts me to dump on Anything Box. I love Peace and Worth with an undying love, but I gots to call 'em like I hears 'em.
